Ashland Choirs Sing with ASO as Blackley Conducts

On Saturday, April 28, the Ashland University Choir and Ashland Area Chorus will combine into a choir of 110 singers to perform selections from Handel's Solomon with the Ashland Symphony Orchestra for their "Romantic April" program. AU Music's Dr. Rowland Blackley will serve as the guest conductor for the piece as ASO Maestro Lipsky is in Korea as guest conductor for the KBS Symphony Orchestra. Religion Honors Society Inducts New Members

Graduating Creative Writing Majors Hold Reading


The five graduating seniors in Creative Writing (Garrison Stima, Amanda Wise, Madison White, Maggie Andrews and Jakob Demers) recently hosted a public reading and presented excerpts from their original works. Also at the event, Jakob Demers was awarded the Richard Snyder Prize for his outstanding capstone project.

Loudonville Choir Performs at AU Spring Choral Concert

Three Ashland University vocal ensembles join forces with the Loudonville High School Symphonic Choir to present the university's annual spring choral concert on Sunday, April 29, at 4 p.m. in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. DETAILS HERE

Costa Rica Program Wins Award

Congratulations to the Ashland University in Costa Rica program for winning the Cultural Program of the Year Award at the Leadership and Service Awards reception. Also, many thanks to Dr. Barbara Schmidt-Rinehart for her dedication to the program.

Posner Receives Excellence in Scholarship Award

Dr. Mason Posner, professor of biology, has been selected as the third recipient of the Ashland University Excellence in Scholarship Award. The award recognizes Ashland University faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship. AU Provost Dr. Eun-Woo Chang spoke highly of Posner, noting he has served Ashland University for nearly 20 years as a faculty member in the Department of Biology/Toxicology and clearly has a love for his subject of Biology. Wardrop Presents Reading at Spring Reading Series

Poet Daneen Wardrop will present a public reading on Monday, April 23 at 4 p.m. in the university's Ronk Lecture Hall as part of the spring reading series. She is the winner of the 2015 Snyder Prize  and the 2017 IPPY gold in poetry.

Concert Celebrates "The Masters" & More

The Department of Music presents its final band concert of the academic year on Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Hugo Young Theatre. Admission to the concert is free and open to all.

The Ashland Area Community Concert Band under the direction of Leonard Salvo, and the Ashland University Symphonic Band directed by Joseph Lewis, Jr., will perform a program themed "The Masters" as it features major composers within the band and orchestra world. The event will serve as a celebration for the AACCB's 25th anniversary, and will recognize the senior AU Band members for their dedication and contribution to the AU Band program. READ MORE

Rev. Seth Wispelwey, a grassroots organizer, educator, nonprofit consultant, and pastor, will present the 4th Annual "Last Lecture" on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Ridenour Room, Dauch College of Business. Communication Studies Faculty & Students Present at Conference


Dr. Deleasa Randall-Griffiths, from the Department of Communication Studies, participated in a panel titled "'What Makes Us Different?': Sustaining Relevance in Progressive Communication Programs" at the Central States Communication Association Convention in Milwaukee. Hannah Stryker and Maggie Andrews, two students from the department, presented a paper titled "Patient-Centered Communication: A Catalyst for Disclosure" as part of the Undergraduate Honors Research Conference. Jazz at the Nest, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.


The Award-Winning AU Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Scott Garlock will perform their final on-campus concert on Tuesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eagle's Nest. Pre-show music will be provided by The FrankenDom Combo. AUJO's portion of the program will feature a mix of tunes from the 1940s through the turn of the century. AU Psych Faculty and Student Publish Article


AU Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Chris Chartier, psychology major Savannah Lewis, and Northern Illinois University's Dr. Randy McCarthy recently published an article in Eye on Psi Chi. 2018 Opera Scenes: An Evening of Menotti

The Department of Music presents two evenings of opera scenes on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 which will feature the theatrical operas of Gian Carlo Menotti. The nightly 7:30 p.m. performances will be held in the intimate Studio Theatre at Ashland University, and are free and open to the public. Senior Chemistry major Corey Turpin will be setting a record at the 2018 URCA Symposium that will be hard for others to beat. Not only will he be presenting at his third URCA Symposium, but he will be involved in three different presentations this year. URCA Adds Presentations by AU Alumni

New this year to the URCA Symposium will be research presentations by two arts and sciences alumni, Mary Moeller (Psychology, 2015) and Dr. Josh Allen (Toxicology/Psychology, 2007). Their presentations will be featured at the Oral Session I from 9 - 10:15 a.m. and are titled "Addressing the Negative Impacts of Aging Stereotypes in Nursing Home Residents" and "Neuropathological and Behavioral Consequences of Inhaled Ambient Ultrafine Particulate Matter Exposure During Development," respectively. Hullman Accepts Position as Chair of Communication Studies

Dr. Gwen Hullman has accepted the position of Associate Professor and Chair of the Communication Studies Department at Ashland University. Gwen and her family recently re-located back to the northern Ohio area after living in Nevada for several years. She currently serves as the Associate Dean for Liberal Arts at the Metropolitan campus of Cuyahoga Community College. Prior to that, she was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. READ MORE

2018 AU Art + Design Senior Exhibition

The 2018 Senior Art Exhibition will open on Thursday, April 12, with an opening reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coburn Art Gallery. The senior art awards will be announced at 5:30 p.m. at the reception. The exhibition will run through May 5 and includes projects in graphic design, digital art, painting, ceramics and printmaking by AU seniors Rachael Santee, Keeleigh Myers, Alex Roddy, Rebekah Hale, Christy Witte and Deveraux Diaz.

More Positive Press For The Psychological Science Accelerator

Dr. Maura Grady, director of the Writing Center, and Bethany Meadows, senior English/Integrated Language Arts major and Writing Center intern, presented a paper at the East Central Writing Center Association Conference held at Ohio State University in Columbus. Grady and Meadows conducted a semester-long assessment in the AU Writing Center examining the Writing Center's effect on students’ understanding of and confidence in their writing process. READ MORE

9th Annual URCA Symposium Slated for April 11

The College of Arts and Sciences is hosting the 9th annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (URCA) Symposium that will feature the works of over 78 students from 16 departments in the College, as well as two alumni. The April 11 symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Myers Convocation Center. The symposium will feature oral presentations, performances, poster presentations and art exhibitions. This year's URCA Symposium coincides with the celebration of Undergraduate Research Week by the Council on Undergraduate Research, of which Ashland University is an institutional member. Pianist Performs AU Concert to Tell the Story of Her Father


AU Music will present a guest artist recital by pianist Sandra Shapiro titled, “Ïn My Father's Footsteps: A daughter's search for answers,” on Sunday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall. Orr Presents Keynote


Shawn Orr, director of faculty services for COAS and interim department chairperson for communication studies, recently presented a keynote address at the Limitless Learning Social Sciences Summit in Houston, Texas. Orr's keynote, Unleashing Student Success for the 21st Century, focused on creating an impactful 21st century classroom to truly engage a new era of students.
