Vocalists Invited to Sing in ASO Pops in the Park
The Ashland Area Chorus invites local singers to join them for a short summer
session and to perform with the Ashland Symphony Orchestra. The 4-week
rehearsal schedule meets for four consecutive Mondays, June 4 - 25, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Ashland
University in Room 242 of the Center for the Arts. The session will conclude on Sunday, July 1 with a
live performance of light, popular, and patriotic tunes with the
Ashland Symphony Orchestra for the Pops In the Park concert at Brookside

Harrison Perseveres to Her Ph.D. and a Research Career
Following graduation with a degree in biology from Ashland in 2010, Dr. Kelly Harrison started her journey toward her Ph.D... In her first class on the first day of her Ph.D. studies, a professor came in to speak about "how to be successful" and told the class that the only thing important in grad school was not brains or talent or whatever, but GRIT. Kelly writes, "It’s so true. A river cuts through rock not because of it's power but because of its persistence!" Little did she know how much persistence would be required of her to finish her Ph.D. program. FULL STORY

Ode to Degas National Juried Exhibition Opens
The Coburn Gallery has opened the national juried exhibition titled “Ode to Degas,” which runs to June 17. This exhibition is a collection of works that embody the concepts of movement explored by Edgar Degas, most specifically in his dancers. The exhibition features 20 artworks from artists across the United States selected by juror Robert Robbins. READ MORE

James Reynolds, Professor Emeritus of English, Passes Away
James Gordon Reynolds, 82 of Ashland, Professor Emeritus of Ashland University, died April 27, 2018, at University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center in Ashland, following a period of declining health. In the fall of 1966, he started teaching at Ashland College and retired from Ashland University as a Professor Emeritus of English in 1998. He was a member of Modern Language Association, American Association of University Professors and Educational Theatre Association.
As well as teaching literature and writing courses (especially modern drama, the essay, existential literature, and playwriting), he was occasionally an adviser for The Collegian, the university student newspaper. In the theater department, Jim directed 43 productions. His presentations of Shakespeare’s (“Hamlet, “Twelfth Night” and “Othello”) were especially memorable, as were his contemporary interpretations of “Master Harold and the Boys,” “Waiting for Godot” and “The Cherry Orchard”. Dupee Produces Stage Management Documentary
AU Theatre alumna Jessica Dupee (2018) spent her entire senior year producing a documentary titled "Through My Eyes: The Unique Perspective of Stage Management in Theatre Production" which follows her journey as the stage manager for the 2017 fall production of "Leveling Up." The documentary served as the end product for her senior theatre
capstone project and will be used by the department to introduce future

Sport Psychology Students Teach Mental Game Skills
Members of the Sport Psychology class (PSYC 280) shared their
newly acquired knowledge about mental game skills with local athletes as
part of a class project. Students divided into groups,
selected a sport, developed a teaching plan, and taught these skills to
groups of high school athletes including
Ashland High School Softball, Ashland High School Girls Track, Hillsdale
High School JV Baseball, Hillsdale High School Track (Boys &
Girls), and the Cleveland Volleyball Company 17s & 18s National

Meadows Awarded Outstanding Honors Thesis
Congratulations to Bethany Meadows for winning the Howard O. Rowe Scholarship which is "awarded annually to the graduating student whose Honors Capstone Project is considered to be the best among his/her peers." Her thesis, "History v. Film: An Examination of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Rhetoric and Ava DuVernay's Selma," examined the differences and similarities between King's historical speeches and the speeches appearing in the film using a neo-Aristotelian rhetorical analysis. Bethany earned two degrees: a B.A. in English and a B.S.Ed. in Integrated Language Arts Education. READ MORE

Communication Studies Welcomes Dr. Hillman
Dr. Cory Hillman (Ph.D, Media and Communication Studies) joins the AU Communication Studies Department as an Assistant Professor. His research addresses how the commercialization of sports is impacting the relationship between fans and sports, the daily fantasy sports industry and its impact on sporting culture, as well as sports video games. Philosophy Essay Contest Winners
The Philosophy Club, in conjunction with Phi Sigma Tau, sponsored an essay competition this year. Submissions were solicited for short essays that clearly argued for a philosophical position or thesis. Essays were blind-reviewed and independently ranked by the faculty of the Philosophy Department.

Charles River Supports Toxicology Major
Last spring, Toxicology and Environmental Science double major Luke Knight received a travel award from the Society of Toxicology to attend the Undergraduate Diversity program at the annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Luke was invited to attend this year's meeting in San Antonio and serve as peer-mentor for that same program. Our local industry partner, Charles River Laboratories, supported Luke's travel.
