Blackley to Conduct "Pops in the Park" Concert

The Guy C. Myers Memorial Band Shell at Ashland City's Brookside Park will host its annual "Pops in the Park" concert by the Ashland Symphony Orchestra  and Ashland Area Chorus on Sunday, June 30 at 8 p.m.

Under the direction of Dr. Ron Blackley, audience members will have the chance to sing along to popular movie musical numbers from “Mamma Mia!,” “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman.” The concert will also include several patriotic pieces in honor of Independence Day including the “Armed Forces Salute,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “America the Beautiful” and two marches by John Philip Sousa: “Semper Fidelis” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The symphony will bring back the “1812 Overture” featuring mock cannon fire from Civil War Battery D from the 1st Ohio Light Artillery. Borton Receives Prestigious Yeager Award

May 2019 AU graduate Corianna Borton was selected as the recipient of this year’s Ernest B. Yeager award by the Cleveland Chapter of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (SAS) and the Analytical Topics Group of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The Yeager Award honors the memory of Ernest B. Yeager, the Frank Hovorka Professor Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University who was known for his pioneering contributions to the fundamental understanding of electrochemical reactions and to the development of fuel cell and battery technology. Psychology Graduates Perform Well on National Test

This spring 11 graduating psychology majors completed an examination of psychological knowledge by taking the Psychology Area Concentration Achievement Test (PACAT). The PACAT measures student knowledge in six foundational areas of the discipline and this exam is used by our department to improve student learning and make data-driven decisions about our curriculum. Students were tested on their knowledge in the areas of abnormal, developmental, experimental design, physiological psychology, personality, and social psychology, and this year's group scored in the 79th percentile of the 5,840 students nationally who also took this exam.

Pleshinger Reflects on Study Abroad in England

I took four classes at Kingston, with two English literature classes, one media class, and a British life and culture class. With only one class per week, most of the work turned out to be papers and reading outside of class, but the class environment was very welcoming. All of the classes were in three-hour blocks, with lectures for one or two hours and then discussion or seminars for the latter half. The lengthy, lecture-based classes were certainly an adjustment, particularly for the English classes where I was used to Ashland’s small class sizes and discussion-based format. Dingus Presents Research at International Conference

Rising senior Abbi Dingus, who is a double major in Biology and Biochemistry, recently presented a poster on her research at the meeting of the Society of Environmental Science and Chemistry (SETAC) in Helsinki, Finland. Abbi's poster, entitled "Density-dependent growth responses of Arabidopsis to copper: High densities are beneficial for efficient contaminant uptake," summarizes work done for her Honors' thesis under the direction of Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer (Chemistry) and Dr. Soren Brauner (Biology). Redden & Yoder Accept Internships

Mathematics and Computer Science juniors Nathaniel Redden and Kurtis Yoder have accepted a summer internships. Nathaniel will be at North Dakota State University as part of their Cyber Security and Cyber-physical Systems REU, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
Kurtis will be working as a transportation logistics intern at NFI Industries in the logistics office at Colgate-Palmolive plant in Cambridge, Ohio.

RSVP's Being Accepted for 1st Annual Marching Band Festival

This is an open invitation to the first annual Ashland University Festival of Bands to be held in Jack Miller Stadium on the campus of Ashland University. The event will be held on Saturday, Sep. 28 starting at 7 p.m. This is not an OMEA sanctioned or competitive event.

The evening will begin with a combined performance of the Star-Spangled Banner with all the participating bands. After that, each band will have approximately 10-15 minutes to perform their show. The evening will culminate in a final performance given by the Ashland University Eagle Marching Band and combined performances of a few marching band favorites. There will be concessions available throughout the event and the hope is to get some good film/audio of each performance.

Please R.S.V.P. as soon as possible via the information below if you can participate! It is sure to be a great performance and a good time for all. I do hope you will be able to attend.

Mondal to Coach Post-Tenure Pathfinders Program

Dr. Sharleen Mondal was invited to become a Master Coach for the Post-Tenure Pathfinders program offered through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) and, after completing a training process earlier this month, will begin serving in this role during the summer 2019 session of the program. The program supports tenured participants in advancing in their career in a strategic and purpose-driven fashion that aligns with their gifts and deeper life goals. AU Problem Solving Group Recognized

The School Science and Mathematics Association recognized the AU Problem Solving Group (PSG) in their May 2019 issue. Janeen Grese was the primary author of the solution.

AU's PSG was also recognized by the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal for correctly solving their problem 1354. Aaron Arnold was the primary author of the solution.

JDM Senior Interview with Luqman Tarouti

Luqman Tarouti traveled across the world to get his education at Ashland University. Luqman, a native of Saudi Arabia, was a Digital Media Journalism major who contributed greatly during his tenure with the Journalism and Digital Media department. He was a prominent writer and reporter for both The Collegian and AU-Live. During the 2018-19 academic year, he was the creative director for AUTV 20 and the driving force behind the station's social media sites.

After graduation, Luqman plans to get a job in multimedia journalism, either in the U.S. or in the Middle East.

AU Science Camp, July 15-19

The Ashland University Summer Science Camp is open to students who have completed the 6th or 7th grade during 2018-19. Participants can expect an engaging environment where they will perform experiments and interact with AU faculty, staff, and students. Guard Tryouts, June 6

Ashland University Music announces that Guard Tryouts for Marching Band will be held on June 6 at 2 p.m. (following the orientation events for that day). We will meet in the band room and go from there.
